Health insurance and retirement on your own
Benefits a job would provide, set up yourself.
Without an employer, you'll need to arrange health coverage and retirement savings yourself. Both are worth setting up early.
Health coverage
- HealthCare.gov or your state marketplace; savings are based on expected income
- Medicaid, if your income qualifies
- Report income changes to keep the right subsidy
Retirement
- An IRA you open yourself
- Self-employed plans such as a SEP IRA or solo 401(k)
- Even small, regular contributions add up
