Guides / Plan around uneven pay

Find your baseline month

Plan for the lean month, not the average one.

5 min read

Your baseline is a realistic low month: what you can count on even when work is slow. Building your budget on it means lean months don't become emergencies.

How to find it

  1. Gather six to twelve months of income from every source
  2. Use what actually landed in your account, after any fees
  3. Note your lowest normal month (ignore a true one-off, like an illness)
  4. If you're self-employed, subtract what you set aside for taxes

Try it

Our irregular income calculator finds your lowest month, your average and a buffer target.
